Book Details:
Book Title Kill and Run, A Thorny Rose Mystery by Lauren Carr
Category:  Adult fiction, 350 pages
Genre:  Mystery, Suspense
Publisher:  Acorn Book Services
Release date:  September 2015
Book Description:

Five women with seemingly nothing in common are found brutally murdered in a townhome outside Washington, DC. Among the many questions surrounding the massacre is what had brought these apparent strangers together only to be killed.

Taking on his first official murder case, Lieutenant Murphy Thornton, USN, believes that if he can uncover the thread connecting the victims, then he can find their murderer.

The case takes an unexpected turn when Murphy discovers that one of the victims has a connection to his stepmother, Homicide Detective Cameron Gates. One wintry night, over a dozen years before, her first husband, a Pennsylvania State trooper, had been run down while working a night shift on the turnpike.

In this first installment of the Thorny Rose Mysteries, the Lovers in Crime join newlyweds Lieutenant Murphy Thornton and Jessica Faraday to sift through a web of lies and cover-ups. Together, can the detectives of the Thorny Rose uncover the truth without falling victim to a cunning killer?
Book review:
Murphy Thornton and Jessica Faraday are newly married. But whatever peace they could find is ruined by five gruesome deaths – murders, no less. Jessica is now richer by $10 million, being Mac Faraday’s daughter. The story focuses on her and her husband (and of course the pets).
While the previous book spoke about Phantoms – secret officers of the government who are trained for specific tasks, this one shows us one real Phantom. During a day job where he is advised to not get involved, Murphy finds himself in a house where five gruesome murders have occurred. This part is explained well.
Enter Cameron Gates, his step mother, who has a haunting past of her own. She comes and stays with her step son to seek some answers. Soon, things turn dark and murky. As the characters lead a quest for answers, more and more questions and shocking past events are thrown up.
The deeper they dig, the dirtier it gets. To those who are familiar with the earlier Mac Faraday books (not me, though) this book will seem like meeting someone from the family. The story is built up at a steady pace. The detailing about the military gives a nice edge to the story. The author also has a way of connecting story lines in the present and past in the most enjoyable of ways.
Much like the previous book (three days to forever) this book is also full of political intrigue and lies, deceit and illusions. The language and the overall phrasing are a bit difficult to read at times. But the writing style is pleasing overall. Sometimes the plot and the military detailing leaves a little to be desired. This is not a deal breaker but for someone who has come to love military and police based stories this was a bit unsettling.
Read this book if you love a nice sense of humour in your books and also casual banter between characters even during the most tensed times.
